Is Chiropractic Therapy Safe for Neck Pain?

In Medscape CME,I have learned that"Chiropractic therapy for neck pain has a high rate of adverse reactions, according to the results of a randomized study published in the July 1 issue of Spine. The investigators suggest that if chiropractic treatment is needed, mobilization is better than manipulation.
According to Dr. Hurwitz, only several hours after the treatment, nearly a third to a half patients complained of transient pain exacerbation, stiffness, radiating symptoms, headache, tireness, and other uncomfortableness.336 patients were chosen to this investigation, and 280 of them replied.85 patients reported a total 212 adverse symptoms, the most common symptoms were neck pain and stiffness, headache and radiating pain were less common."given the possible higher risk of adverse reactions and lack of demonstrated effectiveness of manipulation over mobilization, chiropractors should consider a conservative approach for applying manipulation to their patients, especially those with severe neck pain."
The Health Resource and Service Administration and the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company supported this study(NCMIC),and Dr.Hurwitz was supported by a grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He also claimed that no Benefits in any form have been or will be received from a commercial party related directly or indirectly to this study. But I doubt that National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company may have direct or indirect benefits from this study.Cause the result of it and further study may greatly reduce or even cancel the NCMIC's compensate for chiropractic therapy. And also, reports from the media of this result could make a considerable number of patients give up chiropractic therapy, and this will bring indirect benefits to the insurance company,or even underwriting.Additionally, there were no evidences to prove whether "no benefits in and form have been or will be received from a commercial party",guess who will make effort to inquiry it?
Medscape CME indicated that "Study limitations include potential outcome misclassfication, confounding, lack of generalizability, and the imprecision of estimates.
We are disappointed that the study lasted only two weeks, how can we know whether or not the reported adverse symptoms are transient? Maybe they could disappear in longer thiropractic therapy,or on the contrary, worsening.(The author admitted that the majority of symptoms disappeared with 24 hours of onset and did not impair activities.
Theoretically speaking, chiropractic therapy for neck pain have strict indications and contraindications. Some complicated therapeutic applications of chiropratic are not allowed to be performed by jackaroos.Patients ought to prefer those reliable chiropractors.First of all,you should consult you doctor for whether or what kind or chiropractic therapy you shall take.
